Opportunity Information: Apply for USDA NIFA TCEG 008681
The Tribal Colleges Education Equity Grants (TCEG) Program is a discretionary grant opportunity from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) that aims to strengthen Tribal education capacity in the food and agricultural sciences for Native Alaskan and American Indian students. This solicitation launches a new four-year continuation funding cycle and is built around the idea that effective agriculture and STEM education at Tribal Colleges should be culturally grounded, student-centered, and directly tied to workforce preparation as well as community needs. The program emphasizes learning environments where students backgrounds, identities, and community knowledge systems are treated as assets, not add-ons, and where instruction supports both technical skill development and long-term success in agricultural and related careers.
The program is organized around six legislatively mandated priorities. Applicants can design projects that focus on: (1) culturally relevant curriculum design and materials development, (2) culturally responsive faculty development and teacher preparation, (3) student experiential learning, (4) equipment and instrumentation for teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM), (5) student recruitment and retention, and (6) instruction delivery systems and strategic partnerships. In practice, these priorities support a wide range of activities, such as creating new or updated course materials that reflect local Tribal contexts and food systems, training faculty to teach in ways that align with culturally responsive pedagogy, expanding hands-on learning through internships, fieldwork, or lab-based experiences, upgrading teaching labs and instructional equipment, building stronger pathways to bring students into agriculture programs and keep them enrolled through graduation, and improving how courses are delivered (including distance learning infrastructure) while forming partnerships that add expertise, placements, or resources.
A defining feature of TCEG is its explicit focus on developing culturally responsive students and faculty who can connect academic learning with Tribal leadership, traditional knowledge, and community responsibilities. The goal is not only to prepare students for employment in the private sector, but also to support careers in Tribal and non-Tribal government roles and in academia. Teaching-focused applications under TCEG are required to clearly incorporate a Tribal leadership development component, meaning the project should show how it will help graduates leave with both technical competencies in agriculture or related sciences and leadership abilities that can be applied in Tribal communities and professional settings.
Eligibility is limited to Tribal Colleges and Universities that are formally designated as 1994 Land-grant Institutions under the Equity in Educational Land-Grant Status Act of 1994 (7 U.S.C. 301, as amended). Only these 1994 institutions may submit applications as the primary applicant. However, award recipients are allowed to subcontract with other organizations that are not themselves eligible to apply, as long as those partners are necessary to carry out the proposed project work. The RFA stresses that meeting eligibility requirements by the application deadline is essential; failure to do so can result in an application being excluded from consideration or prevent NIFA from issuing an award.
The opportunity listing identifies the program as CFDA 10.221, with the funding opportunity number USDA NIFA TCEG 008681, and categorizes it as a grant under the agriculture activity area. The original closing date shown is 2024-03-27. The listing also shows an award ceiling of $130,000.
